You can play either gender. There are minor plot variations for male and female, but they don't affect the outcome.

I play mostly female myself, but here they seem to get much more special attention, with Robin, Gawain and The Fox for instance, which probably males won't get... unless they do.
From my 3 favourite characters in Enigma Island, only Bonzo doesn't seem to care if the one is barking at is male or female...
